Cash Games at the Poker Lounge
Our poker lounge is tucked inside the Christchurch Central City venue at 30 Victoria Street. It runs as its own dedicated room, separate from the main gaming floor with its own check-in desk and atmosphere. We spread No Limit Texas Hold’em and Pot Limit Omaha at several different stakes, so there is usually a table that feels comfortable whether you are brand new to live play or already grinding regularly.
Cash games run Wednesday through Sunday, starting at 6 p.m. and continuing until closing. If you prefer to lock in your spot before leaving home, our SMS waitlist system handles early registrations. You do need an active player card in our system first. Once that is sorted out, you just text the game code to 5422 and your name goes straight into the queue. If you are already at the casino, you can use the kiosk on the floor instead.

Most new visitors gravitate to the $1/$3 No Limit Hold’em game first. It is the most regularly running table and, in practice, usually the easiest list to get through. At the other end, the $5/$10 Hold’em and $5/$5/$10 PLO are more likely to pick up on busier nights and tend to draw a more seasoned group of players. It is worth having that in mind so you are not planning your visit around a high-stakes game that might not be running on a quiet Wednesday.
Buy-ins and Rake
Each cash game has a set buy-in range depending on the stakes. The $1/$3 No Limit Hold’em and $1/$2 Pot Limit Omaha tables carry buy-ins of $100–$400, while the $2/$5 No Limit Hold’em runs $150–$600. The $5/$5 PLO sits at $300–$1,000. Rake is 10% with a $15 cap for most cash games.
Getting a Seat - How It Actually Works
Players walking into a live room for the first time sometimes make this more complicated than it needs to be. Once you have been through it once, the whole process feels quite simple.
- Make your way to 30 Victoria Street, Christchurch Central City.
- At the entrance, show valid photo ID. You must be at least 20 years old, there are no exceptions on this point.
- If you do not yet have a player card, head to the poker desk or kiosk and get that created before doing anything else.
- Look at the board or screens in the lounge to see which games are open and how long each current waitlist is.
- Text the correct game code to 5422, or put yourself on the list directly at the kiosk.
- Stay nearby and wait until staff call your name when a seat becomes available.
- Before you sit down, buy your chips at the cashier cage as directed.
- Take your assigned seat, check in with the dealer, and you are in the game.
If you already have a player card from an earlier visit, you can skip all the initial admin and go straight to the SMS step from home. On a packed Friday or Saturday night this makes a real difference - instead of standing around for an hour, you may already be moving up the list by the time you walk through the doors.
One more general piece of advice from us: if you are new to live poker rooms anywhere, aim to arrive a bit earlier than you think is needed. Waitlists do not always move in a predictable way, and that first visit always takes longer with registration, finding the room, and getting comfortable at the table.
Tournament Schedule and the NZPC
We host the New Zealand Poker Championships each year at Christchurch Casino. The NZPC is our flagship national series, and for a lot of players it is the reason to schedule a trip to Christchurch specifically. The line-up usually includes the Main Event, the Big Bounty, the Canterbury Champs, and the South Island Champs. Between NZPC series, our poker room runs weekly tournaments across several formats and buy-in levels. There is a Monday Turbo No Limit Hold’em freezeout. On Tuesdays we run a mixed-format tournament that alternates between Hold’em and Omaha. Sundays are kept lighter with a low buy-in Hold’em event that is much more manageable for smaller bankrolls or casual players. Buy-ins for weekly tournaments range from NZ$10 to NZ$200, while NZPC events have higher pricing.
